While traveling in Italy I found my focus drawn to fragments of hands in museums and churches. I found Classical sculptures, Renaissance masterpieces, and sacred tombs – and all seemed to speak both silently and powerfully. I’m fascinated by the ways the hands in sculpture have mirrored human emotion and intention throughout the history of art, and how such gestures lend themselves to metaphor and are imbued with a powerful presence.
